After they finished kissing, she took off her blue cape, and laid it over a woman sleeping on a nearby bench. It was such an unbelievably poetic moment, I actually chased them down to fact-check my own eyes.

“Excuse me. Was that your blue blanket?”
“Yes.”
“And you just gave it to her?”
“….Yes, why?”
“Oh nothing.”

Here’s the cover to Stumptown Volume 2, #1—first issue of “The Case of the Baby in the Velvet Case”, and this whole arc is a humdinger. Really excited for everyone to get a look at it; first issue is due out in August, I believe.

Sea-Tac Airport now, wearing amazing noise-cancelling headphones (first time I’ve ever worn them, and good lord, it’s like owning a private island). Jon Brion and Brad Mehldau playing the Kinks’ “Waterloo Sunset” live, improvising over this beautiful melody and these beautiful words, and the best music and the best movies and the best comics are all about risk.

I hear this dangerous atmosphere—mistakes happen, cues get missed, lyrics get dropped—and something unexpected and shockingly pretty happens and it makes you want to cry. There’s something “real life” about that and that’s what it’s supposed to do, right? ”Hold the mirror up to nature”?

Boy I wish corporate superhero comics had that sense of danger and collapse and beauty. Less “Nevermind”, more “In Utero”.
